Business Excerpt
Tried counseling and felt disappointed, frustrated, and/or misunderstood? Does the idea of "being in therapy" not appeal to you? There is another way: Personal Development Mentoring. Personal Development Mentoring is a peer-mentoring process that takes the judgment out of the interaction completely by focusing on what you want your life to be like, then figuring out how to get there. All in the comfort of your own home (or a private space in a public library, if you aren't comfortable meeting in your home). In addition, the Personal Development Mentor is available by phone, email, and/or text for consultation outside of the weekly session, when you need help most--in the moment of one of your life's challenges. Personal Development Mentoring emphasizes a non-judgmental, natural-consequences approach, which can help an individual recognize, evaluate, and change the thoughts that lead to goal-impeding behavior. While Personal Development Mentoring has its basis in cognitive-behavior therapy, the method is both less than and more than traditional counseling/therapy, and helps you find new ways of achieving the life you want to live by looking at things from a different perspective, and, thus, seeing a new path to build that life. Not counseling. Not therapy. Real help--without judgment--that works. Gretchen Alder, founder and practitioner of Personal Development Mentoring, has been exploring this method of helping people for the past seven years, and has a wide variety of success stories of the benefit of Personal Development Mentoring. She has earned a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Notre Dame de Namur University in 2001, Certification in Alcohol and Other Drug Counseling from the Illinois Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Certification Association in 2011, and a Graduate Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology in 2012. Her experience working in the social services field motivated her to develop Personal Development Mentoring, which she describes as “not walking ahead of you and pulling you; not walking behind you and pushing you; but walking beside you and pointing out things you might not see along the way.” She uses both her education and personal life experience--within and outside of the LGBTQ, Kink, Swinger, and Polyamory communities--to act as a mentor for those who are finding life's challenges to be overwhelming. New Mind Paradigm is the non-profit organization that supports both the research and practice of Personal Development Mentoring. Its unique donation-only system is structured to help those in greatest need regardless of ability to pay; as such it bills no insurance organizations, but accepts donations from those it serves and from the general public.
