WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "EMOTIONAL WELLNESS SOLUTIONS?"
In contemporary society, the path to getting well often involves waiting until one is sick and then seeking treatment for an illness via the health care industry. Much less emphasis is placed on helping well people stay well, or helping people who are “stuck” to get moving in the right direction before they become “sick.”
At "journeys," the focus is on helping people who are psychologically healthy resolve situational problems and develop the skills to lead emotionally satisfying lives. By partnering with an Emotional Wellness Adviser (EWA), you will engage in a thought-provoking and creative process that will inspire you to maximize your personal and emotional potential to produce fulfilling results in your personal, interpersonal and emotional life, improve your performance, and enhance the overall quality of your life.
HOW COULD I BENEFIT FROM PARTNERING WITH AN EMOTIONAL WELLNESS ADVISER?
Once you engage with an EWA, you can expect to experience fresh perspectives on personal challenges and opportunities, enhanced thinking and decision making skills, improved interpersonal effectiveness and increased confidence in carrying out your chosen work and life roles.
Being emotionally well is more than just handling stress. It also involves being attentive to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, whether positive or negative.
Emotional wellness implies the ability to:
-
Be aware of and accept our feelings, rather than deny them
-
Have an optimistic approach to life
-
Express feelings freely and manage feelings effectively
-
Express emotions appropriately
-
Adjust to change
-
Cope with stress in a healthy way
-
Enjoy life despite its occasional disappointments and frustrations
Working with an EWA, you will see improvement in your ability to:
-
Arrive at personal choices and decisions based upon the synthesis of feelings, thoughts, philosophies, and behavior
-
Live and work independently while realizing the importance of seeking and appreciating the support and assistance of others
-
Form interdependent relationships with others based upon a foundation of mutual commitment, trust and respect
-
Take on challenges, take risks, and recognize conflict as being potentially healthy
-
Manage your life in personally rewarding ways, and take responsibility for your actions
The path to emotional wellness may involve:
-
Awareness of thoughts and feelings
-
Using a positive attitude
-
Seeking support and expressing emotions in a suitable manner
-
Learning time management skills
-
Setting priorities
-
Accepting mistakes and learning from them
-
Maintaining life balance
WHAT DOES AN “EMOTIONAL WELLNESS ADVISER” DO?
An EWA listens, observes and tailors their approach to your individual needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from you, believing that you are naturally creative and resourceful and their job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, creativity and untapped potential that you already have.
Emotional Wellness Advisers assist in the development your full potential by addressing such “topics for exploration” as:
-
Building Self-Esteem and Self Confidence
-
Managing Time More Effectively
-
Changing Bad Habits
-
Thinking More Rationally and Keeping Things in Perspective
-
Enhancing Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills
-
Improving Relationships with Others
-
Becoming Less Vulnerable to Sadness
-
Defeating Chronic Worry
-
Developing a Positive Identity
-
Learning to Relax
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM COUNSELING OR PSYCHOTHERAPY?
The services offered at "journeys" are not the same as counseling or psychotherapy. Psychotherapy traditionally focuses on serious, diagnosable problems associated with intrapsychic, internal, and personal issues and conflicts. Characteristically, counseling and psychotherapy emphasizes the past more than the present, insight more than change, the detachment of the therapist, the therapist’s role as an “expert,” and focuses on reconstructive change.
At "journeys," we focus on the interaction of emotional and situational problems and the development of skills, behaviors and solutions to improve emotional wellness. We support emotional growth and development based on changes that you want to make in pursuit of your desired outcomes that are linked to personal, emotional and interpersonal success. We are forward moving and future focused.
While psychotherapists and counselors tend to view their patients in terms of illness, diagnoses, and presenting problems, at "journeys" we know you are competent and capable, perhaps in need of assistance in navigating the personal, interpersonal and emotional aspects of your life. We do not consider you to be “sick” but rather “stuck.” Sometimes you just need information or a way to clarify and use the information you already possess. At "journeys" we do not diagnose and treat mental illness, but rather encourage actions that improve your emotional wellness and the development your full potential.
IS JOURNEYS FOR EVERYONE?
There are some people who will not benefit from "journeys: emotional wellness solutions." These include individuals who:
-
Have a clinically significant mental illness as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and are currently symptomatic;
-
Experience suicidal ideation, have an active suicide plan, or had serious and significant past suicide attempts;
-
Have an active chemical addiction to drugs or alcohol or, if in recovery, have fewer than 5 years of continuous abstinence from mood altering substances;
-
Possess a rigid, deeply-ingrained, inflexible belief that the path to happiness and emotional well-being involves changing things that are beyond one’s control, such as others’ behavior or other external circumstances, and are unwilling to explore options for changing this belief and accepting personal responsibility for becoming more emotionally well.
IS JOURNEYS RIGHT FOR ME?
Ask yourself the following questions…
-
Am I able to maintain a balance of work, family, friends, and other obligations?
-
Do I have ways to reduce stress in my life?
-
Am I able to make decisions with a minimum of stress and worry?
-
Am I able to set priorities?
-
Do I manage my emotions well, expressing them when it’s good to do so and containing them when needed?
-
Do I have people in my life with whom I can talk about emotional issues without being judged, told to “get over it,” or told to “stop being so emotional?”
If you answered "No" to any of these questions, it may indicate an area where partnering with an EWA from "journeys" may be beneficial for you.
